Statement of Philosophy

Some excerpts from our Statement of Philosophy:

We believe that humans are total integrated beings with the intellectual, emotional, social, physical and spiritual parts developing at all times, so our program follows the child’s personal growth path in each of these areas.

We believe that learning, growth, and development are natural and exciting parts of life and do not need external incentives, so we do not use rewards, punishments, coercion, or grades.

We believe in freedom, not license. This means in our program, we allow a very wide range of choices and behaviors, but are very active as adult role models in setting limits of respect and limits for safety. Students get an extraordinary amount of practice in living with the consequences of their choices, as well as experience in challenging limits, discussing limits, participating in setting and changing limits, and understanding limits, so they can deeply understand the responsibilities that go along with freedom.

We believe the global environment in which we live includes so many different cultures and ways of being that a strict right/wrong view of actions won’t work in global human relations. We believe the conflict resolution and interpersonal negotiation skills that students learn at Play Mountain Place will serve them well in their futures as adults.
