School Philosophy and Teacher Role

Play Mountain Place is a humanistic alternative school with a philosophy of deep respect for children and for the process of children’s development and learning proceeding at their own pace. We strongly support the expression of feelings, and children’s emotional and social growth and development is as much a part of our program as their physical and intellectual growth.

Teachers must know how to listen well to children’s feelings, help children find safe outlets for their feelings and model a non-authoritarian conflict resolution process that respects differences and empowers children to come to solutions by consensus and mutual agreements.

Teachers also work very closely with parents in our parent education and support programs. Family/school relationships are very personal and close. Teachers work in teams and consequently, must be committed to very respectful and involved interpersonal communication processes and consensus decision-making in group settings.

Both child-initiated and teacher-offered activities make up the daily curriculum. Teachers need to be skilled at supporting and facilitating child-initiated curriculum. Teacher-offered curriculum is expected to be experiential, developmentally appropriate and reflect our commitment to anti-bias education.
